Suzan Mayer: A Retrospective

Portland, Oregon. Throughout the month of January Evolve Gallery at the 100th Monkey Studio is proud to host two connecting exhibits: The Oregon Women’s Caucus for Art and one OWCA member’s retrospective, Suzan Mayer. The opening event is from 6-9pm on Friday, January 6th, 2012 and will hang throughout the gallery until January 27th, 2012. There will be live music by Amber Harlan.  The event is free and open to the public.
 
In the Lounge Gallery, the artwork of Suzan Mayer, a member of the OWCA, will be featured. This retrospective will feature her past and present work, which Mayer has used to deal with the “strains and complexities” of her life. Mayer states:
 
"I sometime feel I am balancing my physical, etheric and emotional bodies to each other. 
 
It is calming, like meditation or prayer. In this state of mind. One allows patterns to arise from chaos. It feels very healing
 
Hopefully you too will be able to "let go" and allow your rationality to engage your poetical self when you gaze at my art."
 
Mayer has lived in Portland all her life and since her health crisis her art has changed. She now describes her art as “dark and crunchy, using natural and human-made objects as well as conventional paints.”
 
In the main gallery, the artwork of several OWCA members will be featured. OWCA is a national non-profit association of professional women artists, art educators, art students and arts administrators. The national caucus was formed in 1972 as an outgrowth of the College Art Association. The Oregon chapter was formed in 1987 to reach out to women in all of Oregon and southwest Washington. The OWCA is committed to: education about the contributions of women, opportunities for the exhibition of women’s work, publication of women’s writing about art, professional equity for all, respect for all individuals without discrimination, and support for legislation relevant the their goals.
